PhD student Rie Beck Hansen has won 1st prize for best trainee presentation in the hyperpolarization category at ISMRM 2018 conference.

As an international conference gathering both scientists, clinicians and industry in the MR field, the annual ISMRM (International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine) conference is an important event for the researchers at HYPERMAG and Center for Magnetic Resonance. Here they get to present their most recent results and be inspired by others, discuss new ideas and extend their network.

This year, for her presentation of the poster Integrated B1+ Mapping for Hyperpolarized 13C MRI in a Clinical Setup using Multi-Channel Receive Arrays, PhD student Rie Beck Hansen was awarded 1st prize for best trainee presentation in the Hyperpolarization Methods and Equipment for Targeting Biological Mechanisms Study Group Trainee Competition.

Rie's work is based on a study she did during a research secondment at University of California San Francisco (UCSF), United States, where she joined Professor Daniel Vigneron's group for six months. The study demonstrates the feasibility of integrated B1+ mapping for large volume thermal and hyperpolarized phantoms in a clinical setup using a clamshell transmit coil and a 16-channel receive array, and a 3D stack-of-spirals sequence. Phase-sensitive coil-combination was achieved using ESPIRiT.

Rie's PhD project is funded by Danish Independent Research Foundation as part of the project Highly Efficient Cryogenic Resonators for Magnetic Resonance and Dynamic Nuclear Polarisation. Her research secondment at UCSF was funded by a travel grant from Elite Research Initiative (EliteForsk). 

Rie´s research is part of the HYPERMAG Center of Excellence funded by Danish National Research Foundation. Center for Hyperpolarization in Magnetic Resonance (HYPERMAG) is committed to addressing basic scientific questions of hyperpolarization, a novel technology enhancing the MR signal dramatically, by providing a theoretical and experimental basis of the MR signal and optimal ways of extracting information about the system to enable new vistas in medicine, biology and chemistry. Her main focus is parallel imaging, a method to achieve reduced scan times through the use of multi-channel coils. Hyperpolarized Metabolic MR is a unique enabler of metabolism measurements, e.g. in cancerous tissue, but the fast decay of the signal demands novel takes on fast data acquisition.
