PhD student Cristina Paquinelli has left Center for Magnetic Resonance for a one-year external research stay at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in Daejeon, South Korea.

Cristina will work at the Biomedical Microsystems Lab under the supervision of Lab Leader, Assistant Professor Hyunjoo J. Lee. The stay is of mutual benefit, as the KAIST Biomedical Microsystems Lab is working on developing an ultrasound neuromodulation system that allows stimulation of brain regions non-invasively. Cristina will continue her work on establishing and demonstrating a setup for low-intensity focused ultrasound pulsation (LIFUP), using transducers designed at KAIST.

LIFUP offers better spatial focality and can potentially enable focus stimulation in deeper areas of the brain. These are known to play a major role in many neuropsychiatric diseases and a demonstration of the method will contribute to paving the way for novel diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities.

Cristina will return to DTU in September 2017 to finish her PhD. Her DTU Supervisors are Associate Professors Axel Thielscher and Lars G. Hanson.
